TIME Edvard Grieg Choir and Edward Gardner

Oslo Kulturkirken Jakob December 18 at 19.00

Time is the recurring theme in this concert of 20th-century a cappella choral music.
The music in this concert ranges widely; from songs by four English composers, composed on the occasion of personal or public events, including the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, via early, tonality-exploring music by Webern and later compositions by Schoenberg (who celebrates 150 years this year). The concert concludes with two works from the early 1980s; Alfred Schnittke's beautiful and meditative Russian Orthodox Sacred Hymns, and György Ligeti's Drei Phantasien nach Friedrich Hölderlin, a stunning tour de force for 16-voice a cappella choir.
The program is a celebration of the extraordinary compositional developments that took place in choral music in the 20th century. Traditional choral sounds were juxtaposed with modern, innovative compositional techniques, expanding the technical and expressive possibilities of music for a cappella choirs.
Edvard Grieg Kor, Bergen's professional choir, is thrilled to make its Oslo debut under the direction of its acclaimed chief conductor Edward Gardner.

"Time" is a theme that runs through this programme of a cappella choral works from the 20th century. Ranging from music by four English composers marking personal and public events, including the coronation of Queen Elisabeth II, through early tonality-stretching Webern and gritty late Schoenberg (whose 150th birth anniversary falls this year), to works from the early 1980s, with Alfred Schnittke's beautiful and meditative Russian Orthodox Sacred Hymns and György Ligeti's Drei Phantasien nach Friedrich Hölderlin, a fantastic tour de force for 16 part choir. This programme celebrates the extraordinary development of choral music in the 20th century by contrasting traditional choral sounds with modern, innovative writing that truly extended the technical and expressive possibilities of a cappella choral music.

This concert marks the final appearance of Edward Gardner as chief conductor of the Edvard Grieg Choir, after a period characterized by a fantastic and significant collaboration. Under Gardner's leadership, the choir has experienced an artistic development and inspiring musical moments that have left their mark both nationally and internationally. His efforts have lifted the choir to new heights, and this concert will be a special opportunity for both performers and audience to thank Gardner for his dedication and passion.
