Classic Christmas tunes with rhythms from around the world with Edvard Grieg Youth Choir, Bergen Boys' Choir and Bergen Girls' Choir.

Arnold Schönberg – Gurrelieder

This year's artists are Edvard Grieg choir, Elvira Nikolaisen, Maria Arredondo, Torstein Sødal and Mathea Mari. In Mercy Ships Norway, the joy was great when they agreed to sing for income for people who lack even the most basic health services.

Olav, saint and king, was praised in Gregorian chant and kept alive in the accounts of the miracles he performed throughout Scandinavia. In this new work, old Gregorian chants in Latin are united, taken from manuscripts that were scattered and partially lost during the Reformation.

Edvard Grieg Choir participates in the performance of Haydn's masterful oratorio from 1798. The work describes and celebrates the creation of the earth as it is described in the Bible and in John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost.

Edvard Grieg Choir participates when Bergen National Opera and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra present Otello by Giuseppe Verdi, a powerful drama about jealousy and love.

Bergen church autumn festival: Lobet den Herrn – Bach motets and Psalms of David 90

Edvard Grieg Kor presents a program with great contrasts: Three of Johann Sebastian Bach's most beloved motets stand side by side with a wide selection of choral music from the 19th century to the present day, most with texts from the Psalms of David.

Just before the pandemic broke out, VOCES8 and Edvard Grieg Kor were entering into a new collaboration. The physical meeting will now have to wait, but Autunnalen is happy to still have VOCES8 on the programme, with a digital opening concert from London!

The choral work Lux Aeterna was composed by the Hungarian-Austrian composer György Ligeti (1923-2006) in 1966 and is both mysterious, disturbing and peacefully beautiful. Film director Stanley Kubrick used the music in his 1968 film classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The text is taken from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass.

In December, we gather all the Edvard Grieg Choirs for our traditional Christmas concert in the Cathedral. All generations are gathered here: the aspirants singing their first concert, the slightly older children in the Edvard Grieg Girls' Choir and Edvard Grieg Boys' Choir, the young people in the Edvard Grieg Youth Choir and the eight permanent singers in the Edvard Grieg Vocal Ensemble.

The Edvard Grieg choirs for children and young people are returning to the Troldsalen! After great success last year, we are delighted that they will once again perform Benjamin Britten's "A Ceremony of Carols" in Troldsalen.

This last line from Edmund Spenser's poem "Faire is the heaven", exquisitely set to music by Sir William Harris, is the starting point for tonight's concert.

"The opera above all operas!" says opera director Eivind Gullberg Jensen about Mozart's The Magic Flute. This fall, he himself will be conducting when BNO has the pleasure of presenting a magical and playful version of the classic in Grieghallen. A celebration of the distinctive and original tone artist Harald Sæverud and his musical universe, as well as a premiere performance by Knut Vaage.
This year it is 125 years since Harald Sæverud was born in Nordnes, and it is 30 years since he died. His music has by no means had its last word in the concert hall.

Sir Mark Elder's first concert as first guest conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra is devoted in its entirety to his Norwegian friend Frederick Delius's rarely performed Mass for Life.

Experience this year's winner of the culture prize in the Ytrebygda district, the chamber choir Sola Fide.
This year they have the pleasure of being visited by the professional Edvard Grieg Vocal Ensemble.

When the Edvard Grieg Vocal Ensemble takes place on the Festallmenningen's outdoor stage, it is songs by Edvard Grieg. The choir has a strong connection to Grieg, and has all choral music by Grieg in its repertoire.
